Lord Shiva, there would be no Hindu who wouldn’t be aware of this auspicious god he is one of major deities. He is also one of the three male deities in Hinduism – Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. .Birth and death are not there for this supreme power. His powers has no limit.Mount Kailash is known for his presence.He is considered as a yogi.He also has a happy family with wife parvati and children Lord Ganesh and Lord Muruga.When speaking about lord Shiva the first thing that comes to our mind is his third eye,the snake around his neck,the cresent on his head,the river ganga flowing from his hair,his smile,his attire,the trishul and damaru.We usually find lord Shiva in the form of Linga in many hindu temples.Lord Shiva is worshipped all around the world mainly ny srilankans,Indians and Nepalis.

The word Shiva has the meaning Auspicious. Mahadeva, Mahesha, Maheshvara, Shankara, Shambhu, Rudra,RishikeshHara, Trilochan, Devendra are some of the names of Lord Shiva.

He is always related to Saivism.The Shiva Sahasranama and the Rudra Chamakam are famous.

The crescent moon in his head signifies the time cycle The trishul he hold as a weapon has three spikes in it which symbolizes creation, continuity and destruction.

Lord Shiva is the creator preserver and the destroyer. This has a history lying with it the moon god Daksha had 27 daughters all of them married moon but this moon dint mind them at all .When Daksha knew about he got  angry and cursed moon that it will lose all its radiance and beauty .Day by day the moon got reduced of it phases and finally sank in the ocean as it was ashamed but without the moon many plants that needed its light to grow suffered so finally this moon decided to plead lord Shiva to help him so he kept this moon on his head and made it grow day by day for 15 days and then decay for the rest of the days.

The Bhagirathas want Ganges to come to earth so that his ancestors would be uplifted from sin when it touches the earth. He tried hard to get permission from Indra and finally he accepted and told it would be Ganges who takes the final decision. She also accepted but conveyed that he should find a refugee to withstand the force of her flow So the king seek lord Shiva for help. Ganges thought the lord couldn’t withstand but it got trapped between his hairs and was not able to come down .Then the king pleaded Lord Shiva to somehow make Ganges reach the earth .Finally the roaring Ganga started flowing humbly through a strand of lord Shiva’s hair. Hence the name Gangadharamurthi.

The Serpent king vasuki the snake is coiled around his neck. Snake is something that creates a lot of fear and danger. By coiling it around his neck he means that he can control death fear and danger. The Three snakes symbolize past present and future. He is untouched by the time and he has thaw whole control on it.

We all remember the statue of Nataraja who is no one other than lord Shiva when we think about the danceforms.He does thandavam when he is fierce and destroys the universe paving way for creation. It’s so simple from this that the birth death and rebirth are a part of every ones life cycle. Brahma does restart the process of creation. Lord Shiva is a symbol of Chine that depicts change is something that never changes.

When demons and kings churned the ocean to get amrita they got a deadly poison that would destroy the entire creation when they sought help from lord Shiva he immediately drank it so that he could restore peace hence his throat is blue in color and he is also known as neelakanda.

He is Shiva and he is Shakhty and that is why we mostly see him in the form of ardhanarishvar where he is half portrayed as male and half as female. It means he has both the masculine and feminine energy.The right side is male and left female. It also means that the male is incomplete without a female. The Shakhty is also known as Sati, Uma and Parvati.This also symbolizes that this world is full of opposite powers.Here the male is the passive force and female theactive force.The female part is in the left side of the body where the heart resides and male on the right .

The Heart depicts intuition, creativyity love and gentleness whereas the brain depicts power and logic..The story of Shiva and Sati so touching.Sathi being the daughter of Daksha had sincere love and devotion for Lord Shiva and lived with him in dreams. Finally one day when Shiva appeared before her and asked what was her wish .She dint have the courage to tell that she wants nothing else than him.

But Lord Shiva understood this and wants her to tell finally when she opened up he accepted her and their wedding was done with the blessing of many lords and goddesses and they went to Kailas..Daksha dint really accept that Lord Shiva was the supreme power he felt dejected and felt he was insulted when Lord Shiva din get up to wish him when all others did in a gathering. He wanted to insult Lord Shiva who actually do any wrong he dint get up because he shouldn’t bring sin to Daksha.Daksha arranged a grand sacrificial ceremony and invited everyone other than Lord Shiva.

When Sati came to know about it she felt bad but she wanted to go to here dads place and make him understand that Lord Shiva was the supreme power. Lord Shiva dint want her to go because he dint want her to lose her temper when her father insults him but later sent her along with the white bull nadhi as expected Daksha did the same he insulted Lord Shiva badly that at a point sati felt bad for herself being his daughter and killed herself in the fire. When Lord Shiva came to know about it he got fierce and sent his virabhadra and team and destroyed everything.

Seeing all this other lords pleaded him to calm down and asked him to recreate all the things that were destroyed so that the ceremony would complete. Finally he accepted and cured the injured, brought the dead to life but Daksha was left with a goat’s head he finally admitted his mistake and accepted Shiva as the supreme power. Lord Shiva was waiting for Sati‘s rebirth and she came back to him as PArvati daughter of Lord Himalayas.

She was born to the Lord of Himalayas and from young age had great devotion to lord Shiva finally one day god appeared before her in the form of a old man.He  spoke bad about Lords Shiva she got irritated and asked him to move away. Seeing the devotion and love she had on Shiva the old man came up in his actual form as Lord Shiva and accepted to marry her. The wedding was arranged in a grand manner but on the day of wedding Lord Shiva came in his attire with tigers skin and bone and Skull riding on bull seeing this PArvati’s mother Menakai fainted worrying about her daughter later he dressesd in a handsome groom manner and evry one were pleased by his looks and this form of him is KalyanaSUndarar.

The Demons kamalakshan, tarukakshan, vidhunmali had got a boon from the Lord .It is like that they can not be destroyed till they all come together, and attacked by a single arrow. Though they prayed lords hiva they disturbed devas a lot.When Devas complained to lord Shiva he accepted that he couldn’t do anything as long as they  pray him .

So MahaVishnu in the form of a  sage, and taught the three demons mAyAvAtham  and finally that stopped praying lord now it was time to kill them .When lord appeared before them forgetting their boon they all came together to fight. All was set to kill them they divas thought Lord will kill them with arrow and it was all because of them, but the lord burnt all of them with his smile and proved divas foolish. Later he gave them back life as they were once his devotes and also gave special duties to them.

Gajasura a demon in the form of elephant with many boons used all of it is destruction and disturbing devotees .Once when he was going beyond his limit of disturbing devotes when they were praying in KAshi the lord himself got irritated and stripped him to pieces,It was the most fierceful form of Lord Shiva.

Once Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma had a quarel as whois supreme the quarrel worsened and suddenly a column of pillar like fire came they wer astonished o now they had a bet like who sees the tip of the pillar is the strongest. Lord Vishnu in form of swan tried to reach top but couldn’t and he also realized that it was the supreme lord itself and came  back accepting his defeat whereas lord Brahma took a form of pig and tried to reach the bottom ,he also couldn’t but he came back lying he saw and hence he is not worshipped. Now this column of fire took o form that is formless which is the linga to bless his people.This form yet formless linga is hence worshipped as lord Shiva himself.

The Rishis once thought that the Karma is supreme and stopped worshipping god.Now the lord wanted to teach them a lesson and lord took the form of a naked charming beggar and lord Vishnu as MOhini when they reached the ashrama in search of alms the wife of rishis ayractrd by the beggar moved after him and the rishis behind the mohini .But when they saw their wifes behind a beggar they understood its lords play and started a yaga where all dangerous creature cane out but nothing of that could harm the lord Shiva he changed them in to ornaments and wore it .Later the rishis understood their mistake and pleaded god to forgive them and accepted that he is the supreme power.

Once Parvati was in thapas for lord Shiva and lord Shiva was also in meditation the divas knew only the son of LordShiva nad parvati could destroy demons ad hence they want Lord Shiva and parvati to marry So they told cupid to go and disturb Lord Shiva and create lust which is not possible with god.When cupids along with his wife rati went to Shiva as they were not able to deny the divas .He first aimed a flower arrow which was burnt by Lord Shiva he first got angry and then understood the reason and they married and gave lord Muruga for destroying the demons and hence thelord killed the lust(Kama)

Arjuna wanted to get the weapon pasupatastram from Lord Shiva for the battle of mahabharata so he was in thapas .Lord was moved by his thaps and came down to  give him the weapon but he wanted to play with so he and Pavarotti disguised as Hunter and Huntress. At this time a demon in form of pig came to hit Aruba .Aruba aimed his arrow but before that the hunter killed him. Arjuns got angry when another person hurt his prey so he fought with the hunter and finally lost his bow and started wrestling in the course he touched the feet of the hunter. Then lord Shiva showed his actual form and around felt really bad for fighting with the supreme. The Lord gave his blessings as well as the weapon.

The sage mrikandu dint have child so he prayedto god and did thapas lord appeared before him and gave him two options long living indiscipline son or a disciplined son with short life. He opted second and got Markandeya who grew up to be  a great person when he was 16 he came to know about this through his parents and started doing Shiva puma that even the yamthutha or kala himself could take his life.Finally god moved by his devotion gave him a deathless life.

They  wanted a weapon the sudharshana chakra  that was made by lord Shiva for which he started doing pooja with 100 flowers during which he found he was short of a flower and he gave one of his eye as a flower Moved by his devotion the lord offered him the sudharshana Chakra.

The 16 Monday vrat is very popular since earlier days .It’s nothing but keeping body and mind pure and praying the lord with all devotion to get rid of any difficulties in life.
