1. 877-WHY-ISLAM Brochure

Muslims recite their holy book the Importance of Quran and also turn to it for guidance in all facets of their life. The Quran is basically the last testament in a series of divine revelations from God and its basically exactly the words of God himself. It was revealed through the Angel Gibrael to the final Prophet, Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) some 1400 years ago.

Islam as a faith is actually nothing but continuation of the teachings of previous Prophets, such as Noah, Abraham, David, Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them all). Some of these prophets were given holy or divine books of their own. Islam understands the teachings of all the prophets to the message of peace. Believing in one God, not associating partners with him, coexisting in harmony are the basic fundamentals.

One is to remember how the prophets have spoken about life after death, living well so that one may be sent to heaven and how one would be sent to hell for living in sin. The Quran is unique in that it’s the only revealed book that exists today in the precise form and content in which it was originally revealed. It was actually recorded while Islam was being established.

This holy book contains practical information or rather guidelines of the faith which followers are supposed to live by. The Qurans message is eternal and universal, transcending our differences in race, color, ethnicity and nationality. The Quran famously describes the signs of God’s presence in this world and the universe at large.

According to Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam), former British pop star, “”Everything made so much sense. This is the beauty of the Quran; it asks you to reflect and reason….When I read the Quran further, it talked about prayer, kindness and charity. I was not a Muslim yet, but I felt the only answer for me was the Qur’an and God had sent it to me.”

2. Preservation of the Quran

Preservation of the Quran

The Quran has been preserved as it is and it said in the Quran that “We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly Guard it (from corruption).” Millions of people around the world know the Quran by heart which makes it the only such book in the world. Muslims were never supposed to rely on written records.

However, the Prophet Muhammad was very careful about The Quran’s preservation in the written form too. He couldn’t read or write so he had to summon his scribes to write the Quran as and when it was revealed. The Prophet and his scribes along with hundreds of other people had memorized the Quran and it also existed in written form back then.

4. Who Wrote the Quran

Who Wrote the Quran

It’s a firm belief that the Quran is the exact words of God and the Prophet Muhammad did not write it. How could it be proved that The Holy Quran is only the word of God?

  • The Quran declares that the Prophet couldn’t read or write. Historical documents attest to the same too. “You (O Muhammad) were not a reader of any Scripture before it, nor did you write (such a Scripture) with your right hand, for then those who follow falsehood might (have a right) to doubt it.” [Quran, 29.48] Arabs excelled in oral poetry at the time when the Quran was revealed. There used to be competitions on the streets and when The Quran was recited at such platforms it stunned people with its beauty in Arabic and many people converted only after listening.
  • “And if you are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our slave (Muhammad) then produce a Surah (chapter) of the like thereof, and call your witnesses besides Allah if you are truthful.” [Quran, 2:23] Muhammad was stoned and had to undergo many-many hardships. His disciples were tortured, killed and his clan was boycotted. He was offered a kingship but he didn’t relent and always led a simple, austere life.
  • A testament to the Divine authenticity of the Quran is that such a comprehensive book, one that was revealed over a period of 23 years, does not have any contradictory points. The Holy Quran regularly mentions things that weren’t known at the time. It has descriptions of things so far ahead of its time which were only explained by science in the subsequent hundreds of years.

The expansion of the universe is described in The Holy Quran as follows:

“And it is we who have built the univrse with (Our creative) power; and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it.” [Quran, 51:47].

It was only in 1925 that Edwin Hubble provided evidence of receding galaxies and the expansion of the universe was accepted as a scientific fact. The Quran described Earth as a sphere:

“And the earth moreover, He has made egg shaped4” [Quran 79:30]. In 1597, when Sir Francis Drake sailed around the world, the earth became known to be a sphere.
